Section on voluntary prayers – mentioning the recommendation to consistently perform known voluntary rak’ahs before and after obligatory prayers
Hadith 2454
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدُ بْنُ مُسَرْهَدٍ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ زُرَيْعٍ ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ: " صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَكَانَ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ الظُّهْرِ ، وَرَكْعَتَيْنِ بَعْدَهَا ، وَرَكْعَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ الْمَغْرِبِ ، وَرَكْعَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ الْعِشَاءِ الآخِرَةِ " . وَأَخْبَرَتْنِي حَفْصَةُ " أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ خَفِيفَتَيْنِ حِينَ يُنَادِي الْمُنَادِي لِصَلاةِ الصُّبْحِ ، وَكَانَتْ سَاعَةٌ لا يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْهِ فِيهَا أَحَدٌ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I have performed prayer behind the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He used to perform two rak'ahs before Zuhr and then two rak'ahs after it. He used to perform two rak'ahs after Maghrib. He used to perform two rak'ahs after Isha. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) informed me that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to perform two short rak'ahs after the call to Fajr prayer and before the Fajr prayer itself. (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: This was a time in which no one could present himself before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
