Section on Witr prayer – mentioning the description of Witr when performed as seven rak’ahs
Hadith 2441
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ خُزَيْمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَوْفَى ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ سُئِلَتْ عَنْ وِتْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَتْ : " كُنَّا نُعِدُّ لَهُ سِوَاكَهُ وَطَهُورَهُ ، فَيَبْعَثُهُ اللَّهُ لِمَا شَاءَ أَنْ يَبْعَثَهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ، فَيَتَسَوَّكُ وَيَتَوَضَّأُ ، ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي سَبْعَ رَكَعَاتٍ ، وَلا يَجْلِسُ فِيهِنَّ إِلا عِنْدَ السَّادِسَةِ ، فَيَجْلِسُ وَيَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ وَيَدْعُو " .
Sa’d bin Hisham reports: Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked about the Witr prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so she said: We used to prepare the miswak and the water for ablution of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When Allah willed, he would get up during the night. He would use the miswak, perform ablution, then offer seven rak’ahs. He would only sit after the sixth rak’ah among them. He would sit and remember Allah Almighty and supplicate.
