Section on Witr prayer – clarification that the Prophet sometimes performed more than one rak’ah for Witr at night on some nights
Hadith 2437
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الأَزْدِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَتْ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ثَلاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً ، يُوتِرُ مِنْهَا بِخَمْسٍ ، لا يَجْلِسُ فِي شَيْءٍ مِنَ الْخَمْسِ إِلا فِي آخِرِهِنَّ ، يَجْلِسُ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ " .
Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to offer thirteen (13) rak‘ahs at night, out of which five rak‘ahs were witr. He would not sit between these five rak‘ahs, but only at the end of them. Then he would sit and recite (the tashahhud), and then say the salam.
