Section on Witr prayer – mentioning a report that may mislead those unfamiliar with hadith science into thinking the Prophet prayed every four rak’ahs with one tasleem and Witr with three in one tasleem
Hadith 2430
أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ عَائِشَةَ : كَيْفَ كَانَتْ صَلاةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي رَمَضَانَ ؟ فَقَالَتْ : " مَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي رَمَضَانَ ، وَلا فِي غَيْرِهِ ، يَزِيدُ عَلَى إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً : يُصَلِّي أَرْبَعًا ، فَلا تَسْأَلْ عَنْ حُسْنِهِنَّ وَطُولِهِنَّ ، ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي أَرْبَعًا ، فَلا تَسْأَلْ عَنْ حُسْنِهِنَّ وَطُولِهِنَّ ، ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي ثَلاثًا " .قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَتَنَامُ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُوتِرَ ؟ فَقَالَ : يَا عَائِشَةُ ، " إِنَّ عَيْنَيَّ تَنَامَانِ ، وَلا يَنَامُ قَلْبِي " .
Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman narrates: He asked Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): How did the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) perform voluntary prayers at night during Ramadan? Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would not perform more than eleven rak‘ahs in Ramadan or outside of Ramadan. He would first perform four rak‘ahs—do not ask about their beauty and length—then he would perform another four rak‘ahs—do not ask about their beauty and length. Then he would perform three rak‘ahs. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), do you sleep before performing Witr? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O Aisha! My eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep.
