Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in eight rak‘ahs during the month of Ramadan and performed Witr. When the next night came, we gathered in the mosque. We hoped that you would come and lead us in prayer. We remained there until morning came. (The next day) we said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We were hoping that you would come and lead us in prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I disliked this (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words:) I feared that Witr would become obligatory upon you.
