Section on Witr prayer – mentioning a fourth report explicitly stating that Witr is not obligatory
Hadith 2413
أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : كُنْتُ أَسِيرُ مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بِطَرِيقِ مَكَّةَ ، فَلَمَّا خَشِيتُ الصُّبْحَ نَزَلْتُ فَأَوْتَرْتُ ، ثُمَّ أَدْرَكْتُهُ ، فَقَالَ لِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ : أَيْنَ كُنْتَ ؟ فَقُلْتُ : خَشِيتُ الْفَجْرَ فَنَزَلْتُ فَأَوْتَرْتُ ، فَقَالَ : " أَلَيْسَ لَكَ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُسْوَةٌ ؟ " فَقُلْتُ : بَلَى ، قَالَ : " فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُوتِرُ عَلَى الْبَعِيرِ " .
Saeed bin Yasar narrates: I was traveling with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) on the way to Makkah. When I feared that dawn was near, I got down from my mount and performed Witr. Then I reached Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he asked me: Where were you? I replied: I feared that dawn was about to break, so I got down from my mount and performed Witr. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked: Is there not an example for you in the way of Allah’s Messenger? I replied: Yes, there is. He said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform Witr on his camel.
