Section on Witr prayer – mentioning a second report indicating that Witr is not a required duty
Hadith 2411
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ قُتَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَطَاءُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ اللَّيْثِيُّ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا أَيُّوبَ الأَنْصَارِيَّ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ ، فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِخَمْسٍ فَلْيُوتِرْ ، وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِثَلاثٍ فَلْيُوتِرْ ، وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُوتِرَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ فَلْيُوتِرْ بِهَا ، وَمَنْ غَلَبَهُ ذَلِكَ فَلْيُومِئْ إِيمَاءً " .
Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "Witr is a right. Whoever wishes to perform five witr, let him perform them; and whoever wishes to perform three witr, let him perform them; and whoever wishes to perform one witr, let him perform it; and whoever is unable to perform them, let him perform them with gestures."
