Chapter on What is Disliked and Not Disliked – Clarification that Mention of “Dog” in the Report is General but Refers to Some, Not All Dogs
Hadith 2388
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ قُتَيْبَةَ ، بِخَبَرٍ غَرِيبٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي السَّرِيِّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سَلْمُ بْنُ أَبِي الذَّيَّالِ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلالٍ الْعَدَوِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ ، عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَقْطَعُ الصَّلاةَ : الْمَرْأَةُ ، وَالْحِمَارُ ، وَالْكَلْبُ الأَسْوَدُ " ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ : مَا بَالُ الأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الأَحْمَرِ مِنَ الأَصْفَرِ ؟ ، فَقَالَ : سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَمَا سَأَلْتَنِي ، فَقَالَ : " الأَسْوَدُ شَيْطَانٌ " .
Abdullah bin Samit narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A woman, a donkey, and a black dog (passing in front of a person praying) break the prayer." The narrator says: I asked, "O (Sayyiduna) Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him)! Why a black dog, why not a red or yellow one?" He replied: "I asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) the same question that you have asked me, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The black (dog) is a devil.'"
Hadith 2389
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ السَّامِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، وَحَبِيبِ بْنِ الشَّهِيدِ ، وَيُونُسَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلالٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ ، عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " يَقْطَعُ الصَّلاةَ : الْحِمَارُ ، وَالْمَرْأَةُ ، وَالْكَلْبُ الأَسْوَدُ " ، قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ : مَا بَالُ الأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الأَحْمَرِ مِنَ الأَصْفَرِ مِنَ الأَبْيَضِ ؟ ، قَالَ : يَا ابْنَ أَخِي ، قُلْتُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " إِنَّ الْكَلْبَ الأَسْوَدَ شَيْطَانٌ " .

The narrator states: I asked, "Why a black dog? Why not a red, yellow, or white one?" He replied: "O my nephew, I also asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) the same question, and he said: 'The black dog is a devil.'"
