Chapter on What is Disliked and Not Disliked – Command to Suppress Yawning or Cover the Mouth When Yawning
Hadith 2358
أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ الرَّمَادِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلانَ ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْعُطَاسَ ، وَيَكْرَهُ التَّثَاؤُبَ ، فَإِذَا تَثَاءَبَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَكْظِمْ مَا اسْتَطَاعَ ، أَوْ لِيَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى فِيهِ ، فَإِنَّهُ إِذَا تَثَاءَبَ فَقَالَ : آهْ ، فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ الشَّيْطَانُ يَضْحَكُ مِنْ جَوْفِهِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Indeed, Allah Almighty likes sneezing and dislikes yawning. So when any one of you feels like yawning, he should try his best to restrain it, or else place his hand over his mouth, because when he yawns and says 'Ah', Satan laughs within him (as a result of which this sound comes out)."
