Saeed bin Harith narrates: He presented himself before Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), so Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) informed: I was traveling with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One night, I came to you regarding a certain matter, and I found you performing prayer. I had a garment on my body which I had wrapped around myself as an ishtimal (enveloping oneself with a cloth). I began to perform prayer standing at your side. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the prayer, he said: What is your need? I informed you, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Jabir! How is it that you have worn the garment as an ishtimal, as I am seeing? I said: It is a narrow garment. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you are about to perform prayer and you have only one garment on your body, if it is wide, then wear it as an al-ihtifaf (enveloping oneself), and if it is narrow, then tie it as an izar (lower garment).
