Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) liked to keep a stick in his hand. One day he entered the mosque. A stick was in his hand. He saw phlegm stuck on the wall in the direction of the qiblah of the mosque, so he scraped it off and cleaned it thoroughly. Then, in a state of anger, he turned towards the people and said: Would any one of you like that someone comes before him and spits towards his face? When a person stands to pray, his Lord is in front of him and an angel is on his right side, so he should not spit in front of him or to his right side, rather he should spit to his left side under his left foot. And if the spit comes quickly, then he should do like this, that is, spit into his garment and rub it in.
Hadith 2271
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) liked to keep a stick. He would hold it in his blessed hand. One day he entered the mosque, and there was a stick in his blessed hand. With it, he scraped something. The narrator means that he scraped off phlegm that was stuck in the direction of the qiblah in the mosque, and he forbade a person from spitting in front of himself or to his right side. He said: One should spit to the left or under his left foot, and if the spit comes out forcefully, then he should spit it into his garment and then do like this. Sufyan demonstrated by rubbing the edge of his sleeve with his fingers as an indication.
