Chapter on What is Disliked and Not Disliked – Clarification that “Under His Foot” Means the Left Foot
Hadith 2268
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ قُتَيْبَةَ اللَّخْمِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي حُمَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ، وَأَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ ، يَقُولانِ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأَى فِي الْقِبْلَةِ نُخَامَةً ، فَتَنَاوَلَ حَصَاةً فَحَكَّهَا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " لا يَتَنَخَّمَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي الْقِبْلَةِ ، وَلا عَنْ يَمِينِهِ ، وَلْيَبْصُقْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ ، أَوْ تَحْتَ رِجْلِهِ الْيُسْرَى " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw phlegm stuck (on the wall) in the direction of the Qiblah, so he took a pebble and scraped it off with it. Then he said: No one should ever spit in the direction of the Qiblah, nor to his right side. He should spit to his left side or under his left foot.
