Chapter on What is Disliked and Not Disliked – Report Explicitly Explaining What Was Alluded To
Hadith 2242
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ بَحْرِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ الْبَزَّازُ ، بِنَسَا ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ شُعَيْبِ بْنِ شَابُورَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْعَلاءِ بْنِ زَبْرٍ ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى صَلاةً ، فَالْتُبِسَ عَلَيْهِ ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ ، قَالَ لأَبِي : " أَشَهِدْتَ مَعَنَا ؟ " قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : " فَمَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَفْتَحَهَا عَلَيَّ ؟ " .
Salim bin Abdullah narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was performing a prayer. During it, he experienced doubt. When he finished the prayer, he said to my father, "Were you with us (in the prayer)?" He replied, "Yes." The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Then why did you not prompt me?"
Hadith 2243
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ : كُنَّا نُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَيَرُدُّ عَلَيْنَا ، يَعْنِي فِي الصَّلاةِ ، فَلَمَّا أَنْ جِئْنَا مِنْ أَرْضِ الْحَبَشَةِ ، سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ ، فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ ، فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَرُبَ وَمَا بَعُدَ ، فَجَلَسْتُ حَتَّى قَضَى الصَّلاةَ ، قُلْتُ لَهُ : إِنَّكَ كُنْتَ تَرُدُّ عَلَيْنَا ، فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحْدِثُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا شَاءَ ، وَقَدْ أَحْدَثَ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ قَضَاءً أَنْ لا تَكَلَّمُوا فِي الصَّلاةِ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Previously, during prayer, we used to greet the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam, and he would reply to our salam. The narrator says: This used to happen during prayer. Then, when we came from the land of Abyssinia (to Madinah Munawwarah), I greeted the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam while he was praying, but he did not reply to me. Various apprehensions came to my mind. I sat down until the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) completed his prayer. Then I submitted to him: Previously, you used to reply to our salam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah, the Exalted, can make a new decision as He wills, and He has made a new decision regarding this matter: Do not speak during prayer.
Hadith 2244
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ الرَّمَادِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ أَبِي النَّجُودِ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا نُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ فِي الصَّلاةِ فَيَرُدُّ عَلَيْنَا قَبْلَ أَنْ نَأْتِيَ أَرْضَ الْحَبَشَةِ ، فَلَمَّا رَجَعْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِ النَّجَاشِيِّ ، أَتَيْتُهُ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ ، فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ السَّلامَ ، فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَرُبَ وَمَا بَعُدَ ، فَجَلَسْتُ أَنْتَظِرُهُ ، فَلَمَّا قَضَى الصَّلاةَ ، قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْكَ وَأَنْتَ تُصَلِّي فَلَمْ تَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ السَّلامَ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحْدِثُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا يَشَاءُ ، وَقَدْ أَحْدَثَ أَنْ لا نَتَكَلَّمَ فِي الصَّلاةِ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Previously, we used to greet the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) with salam. At that time, when he was performing prayer, he would reply to our salam. This was before we came (to Madinah Munawwarah) from the land of Abyssinia. When we returned from Najashi, I presented myself before him. He was performing prayer at that time. I greeted him with salam, but he did not reply to my salam. Various apprehensions came to my mind. I sat down waiting for him. When he completed the prayer, I submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! I greeted you with salam while you were performing prayer, but you did not reply to my salam. (In one narration, these words are mentioned:) Previously, you used to reply to salam. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Allah, the Exalted, can make a new decision as He wills, and He has now given a new command: we will not speak during prayer.
