Chapter on the Obligation to Follow the Imam – Emphasis on the Instruction Described
Hadith 2203
أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي السَّرِيِّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُلازِمُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَدْرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ شَيْبَانَ الْحَنَفِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ شَيْبَانَ ، وَكَانَ أَحَدَ الْوَفْدِ الَّذِينَ وَفَدُوا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ بَنِي حَنِيفَةَ ، قَالَ : صَلَّيْتَ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَلَمَّا قَضَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلاتَهُ ، نَظَرَ إِلَى رَجُلٍ خَلْفَ الصَّفِّ وَحْدَهُ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " هَكَذَا صَلَّيْتَ ؟ " . قَالَ : نَعَمْ . قَالَ : " فَأَعِدْ صَلاتَكَ ، فَإِنَّهُ لا صَلاةَ لِفَرْدٍ خَلْفَ الصَّفِّ وَحْدَهُ " .
Sayyiduna Ali bin Shiban (may Allah be pleased with him), who was included in the delegation that came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Banu Hanifa, narrates: I performed prayer behind the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) completed the prayer, he saw a man who was standing alone behind the row and performing prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) asked him: Did you pray like this? He replied: Yes. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Repeat your prayer, for the prayer of the one who stands alone behind the row is not valid.
