Chapter on the Obligation to Follow the Imam – Report Refuting the Interpretation that the Prophet Ordered the Man to Repeat for a Hidden Reason
Hadith 2202
أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدُ بْنُ مُسَرْهَدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُلازِمُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَدْرٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ شَيْبَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، وَكَانَ أَحَدَ الْوَفْدِ ، قَالَ : قَدِمْنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَصَلَّيْنَا خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَلَمَّا قَضَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلاتَهُ ، إِذَا رَجُلٌ فَرْدٌ فَوَقَفَ عَلَيْهِ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى قَضَى الرَّجُلُ صَلاتَهُ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اسْتَقْبِلْ صَلاتَكَ ، فَإِنَّهُ لا صَلاةَ لِفَرْدٍ خَلْفَ الصَّفِّ " .
Abdur Rahman bin Ali bin Shaiban narrates from his father, who was included in the delegation. He says: We presented ourselves before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). We performed prayer behind the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) completed the prayer, a man was standing alone and performing prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stopped by him. When that man completed his prayer, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said to him: Perform your prayer again, for the prayer of a person who stands alone behind the row is not valid.
