Chapter on the Obligation to Follow the Imam – Description of How the Follower Stands with the Imam for Congregational Prayer
Hadith 2197
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ زُرَارَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَاتِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ مُجَاهِدٍ أَبُو حَزْرَةَ ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : سِرْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا عَشِيَّةً وَدَنَوْنَا مِنْ مِيَاهِ الْعَرَبِ ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ رَجُلٌ يَتَقَدَّمُنَا فَيَرِدُ الْحَوْضَ فَيَشْرَبُ وَيَسْقِينَا ؟ " . قَالَ جَابِرٌ : فَقُمْتُ فَقُلْتُ : هَذَا رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَيُّ رَجُلٍ مَعَ جَابِرٍ ؟ " . فَقَامَ جَبَّارُ بْنُ صَخْرٍ ، فَانْطَلَقْنَا إِلَى الْبِئْرِ ، فَنَزَعْنَا فِي الْحَوْضِ سَجْلا أَوْ سَجْلَيْنِ ، ثُمَّ مَدَرْنَاهُ ، ثُمَّ نَزَعْنَا فِيهِ حَتَّى أَفْهَقْنَاهُ ، فَكَانَ أَوَّلَ طَالِعٍ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " أَتَأْذَنَانِ ؟ " . قُلْنَا : نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَأَشْرَعَ نَاقَتَهُ فَشَرِبَتْ ، ثُمَّ شَنَقَ لَهَا فَبَالَتْ ، ثُمَّ عَدَلَ بِهَا فَأَنَاخَهَا ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى الْحَوْضِ ، فَتَوَضَّأَ مِنْهُ ، ثُمَّ قُمْتُ فَتَوَضَّأْتُ مِنْ مُتَوَضَّأِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَذَهَبَ جَبَّارُ بْنُ صَخْرٍ يَقْضِي حَاجَتَهُ ، وَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي ، وَكَانَتْ عَلَيَّ بُرْدَةٌ ، وَكُنْتُ أُخَالِفُ بَيْنَ طَرَفَيْهَا فَلَمْ تَبْلُغْ لِي وَكَانَتْ لَهَا ذَبَاذِبُ ، فَنَكَّسْتُهَا ثُمَّ خَالَفْتُ بَيْنَ طَرَفَيْهَا ، فَجِئْتُ حَتَّى قُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِي ، فَأَدَارَنِي حَتَّى أَقَامَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ ، وَجَاءَ جَبَّارُ بْنُ صَخْرٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَامَ عَنْ يَسَارِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَخَذَنَا بِيَدَيْهِ جَمِيعًا ، فَدَفَعَنَا حَتَّى أَقَامَنَا مِنْ خَلْفِهِ ، وَجَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَرْمُقُنِي وَأَنَا لا أَشْعُرُ ، ثُمَّ فَطِنْتُ ، فَقَالَ : هَكَذَا وَأَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ شُدَّ ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " يَا جَابِرُ " . قُلْتُ : لَبَّيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ . قَالَ : " إِذَا كَانَ ثَوْبُكَ وَاسِعًا ، فَخَالِفْ بَيْنَ طَرَفَيْهِ ، وَإِنْ كَانَ ضَيِّقًا فَاشْدُدْهُ عَلَى حَقْوِكَ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: We were traveling with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), until when evening came, we reached near a water area. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Who will go ahead of us to the pond, drink from it, and give us to drink as well? Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I stood up. I said: This person, O Messenger of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Who will be with Jabir? So Sayyiduna Jabbar bin Sakhr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up. Then both of us walked to the well. He drew one, or perhaps two, buckets from it, then we filled it, then we drew water from it until we filled it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to us first. He asked: Do you both permit? We said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) began to give water to his she-camel. She drank the water, then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave her a chance, so she urinated, then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) tied her, then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to the pond. He performed ablution from it, then I stood up. I also performed ablution from the water of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ablution. Then Sayyiduna Jabbar bin Sakhr (may Allah be pleased with him) went to relieve himself. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up and began to pray. I had a sheet which I had wrapped around myself in the opposite direction, but it did not cover me completely. It had some edges which I tied and wrapped in the opposite direction. Then I came and stood on the left side of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took my hand and turned me to stand on his right side. Then Sayyiduna Jabbar bin Sakhr came. He performed ablution, then he came and stood on the left side of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took both of us with both his hands and made us stand behind him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) kept observing us. I did not realize it at first, then I realized. He said: In this way, he indicated and said, tie it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) finished the prayer. He said: O Jabir! I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! I am present. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: When your garment is wide, then wrap it in the opposite direction, but when it is tight, then tie it as a waist-wrapper.
Hadith 2198
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ الْقَطَّانُ ، بِالرَّقَّةِ وَالرَّافِقَةِ جَمِيعًا ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَكِيمُ بْنُ سَيْفٍ الرَّقِّيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي أُنَيْسَةَ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ ، عَنْ هِلالِ بْنِ يَسَافٍ الأَشْجَعِيِّ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ رَاشِدٍ ، عَنْ وَابِصَةَ بْنِ مَعْبَدِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الأَسَدِيِّ : " أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأَى رَجُلا يُصَلِّي وَحْدَهُ خَلْفَ الصُّفُوفِ ، فَأَمَرَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يُعِيدَ الصَّلاةَ " .
Sayyiduna Wabisah bin Ma’bad Asadi رضي الله عنه reports: The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم saw a man performing prayer alone behind the rows, so the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم instructed him to repeat the prayer.
