Chapter on the Obligation to Follow the Imam – What is Expected if the Congregation Neglects Straightening the Rows
Hadith 2175
أَخْبَرَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ الْمِنْهَالِ بْنِ أَخِي الْحَجَّاجِ الْعَطَّارُ ، بِالْبَصْرَةِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُعَاذِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سِمَاكٌ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ النُّعْمَانَ بْنَ بَشِيرٍ ، وَهُوَ يَخْطُبُ وَيَقُولُ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُسَوِّي الصَّفَّ ، حَتَّى يَدَعَهُ مِثْلَ الْقِدْحِ أَوِ الرُّمْحِ ، فَرَأَى صَدْرَ رَجُلٍ نَاتِئًا مِنَ الصَّفِّ ، فَقَالَ : " عِبَادَ اللَّهِ لَتُسَوُّنَّ صُفُوفَكُمْ ، أَوْ لَيُخَالِفَنَّ اللَّهُ بَيْنَ وُجُوهِكُمْ " .
Sayyiduna Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) stated while delivering a sermon that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to straighten the rows, until he would make them like an arrow or a spear. On one occasion, he saw a man whose chest was protruding ahead of the row, so he said: O servants of Allah! Either you will straighten your rows, or Allah the Exalted will create discord among you.
