Chapter on the Obligation to Follow the Imam – Recommendation for the Imam to Straighten the Shoulders of the Congregation Before Starting the Prayer
Hadith 2172
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَوْنٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَمَّارٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي مَعْمَرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمْسَحُ مَنَاكِبَنَا فِي الصَّلاةِ ، وَيَقُولُ : " اسْتَوُوا وَلا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ ، لِيَلِيَنِّي مِنْكُمْ أُولُو الأَحْلامِ وَالنُّهَى ، ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ، ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ " . قَالَ أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ : وَأَنْتُمُ الْيَوْمَ أَشَدُّ اخْتِلافًا .
Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to pass his hand over our shoulders before starting the prayer and would say: "Keep (your rows) straight and do not differ among yourselves, otherwise your hearts will differ. Let those among you who are wise and experienced stand close to me, then those who are next to them in rank, and then those who are next to them in rank." Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "Today, there are severe differences among you."
