Chapter on the Obligation to Follow the Imam - The reason the Prophet said this statement
Hadith 2147
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ نُصَلِّي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، إِذْ سَمِعَ جَلَبَةَ رِجَالٍ ، فَلَمَّا صَلَّى دَعَاهُمْ ، فَقَالَ : " مَا شَأْنُكُمْ ؟ " . قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، اسْتَعْجَلْنَا إِلَى الصَّلاةِ . قَالَ : " لا تَسْتَعْجِلُوا إِذَا أَتَيْتُمُ الصَّلاةَ فَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّكِينَةُ ، فَمَا أَدْرَكْتُمْ فَصَلُّوا ، وَمَا سُبِقْتُمْ فَأَتِمُّوا " .
Abdullah bin Abu Qatadah narrates from his father: Once we were offering prayer behind the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). During the prayer, he heard the sound of some people hurrying. When he completed the prayer, he called them and asked: What happened to you? They replied: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! We were hurrying to join the prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Do not be hasty. When you come to the prayer, come calmly. Whatever part of the prayer you catch, perform it, and whatever you have missed, complete it (afterwards).
Hadith 2148
أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنِ الْعَلاءِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، وَإِسْحَاقِ أبي عبد الله ، أنهما أخبراه أنهما سمعا أبا هريرة ، يَقُولُ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا ثُوِّبَ بِالصَّلاةِ ، فَلا تَأْتُوهَا وَأَنْتُمْ تَسْعَوْنَ ، وَائْتُوهَا وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّكِينَةُ ، فَمَا أَدْرَكْتُمْ فَصَلُّوا ، وَمَا فَاتَكُمْ فَأَتِمُّوا ، فَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ فِي صَلاةٍ مَا كَانَ يَعْمِدُ إِلَى الصَّلاةِ " . قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : قَالَ اللَّهُ جَلَّ وَعَلا : إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلاةِ مِنْ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ سورة الجمعة آية 9 ، وَقَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " فَلا تَأْتُوهَا وَأَنْتُمْ تَسْعَوْنَ " . فَالسَّعْيُ الَّذِي أَمَرَ اللَّهُ جَلَّ وَعَلا بِهِ هُوَ الْمَشْيُ إِلَى الصَّلاةِ عَلَى هَيْنَةِ الإِنْسَانِ ، وَالسَّعْيُ الَّذِي نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْهُ هُوَ الاسْتِعْجَالُ فِي الْمَشْيِ ، لأَنَّ الْمَرْءَ تُكْتَبُ لَهُ بِكُلِّ خُطْوَةٍ يَخْطُوهَا إِلَى الصَّلاةِ حَسَنَةٌ ، فَذَلِكَ مَا وَصَفْتُ ، يَعْنِي فِي تَرْجَمَةِ نَوْعِ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ عَلَى أَنَّ الْعَرَبَ تُوقِعَ فِي لُغَتِهَا الاسْمَ الْوَاحِدَ عَلَى الشَّيْئَيْنِ الْمُخْتَلِفِي الْمَعْنَى ، فَيَكُونُ أَحَدُهُمَا مَأْمُورًا بِهِ ، وَالآخَرُ مَزْجُورًا عَنْهُ . إِسْحَاقُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مَوْلَى زَائِدَةَ مِنَ التَّابِعِينَ ، قَالَهُ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the iqamah is called for prayer, do not come running towards it, rather come walking with calmness. Whatever part of the prayer you catch, perform it, and whatever you have missed, complete it (afterwards). For when a person goes towards the prayer, he is considered to be in the state of prayer." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Allah Almighty says: "When the call to prayer is made on the day of Jumu'ah, hasten towards the remembrance of Allah." Whereas the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has said: Do not come running towards it. So the hastening which Allah has commanded refers to a person going towards the prayer in a state of calmness, and the hastening which the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden refers to walking quickly. The reason for this is that for every step a person takes, good deeds are recorded for him. As I have mentioned earlier, that is, in the explanation of such types of hadith, I have mentioned this point: that when the Arabs use a single word for two different things in their language, then one of them can be commanded and the other can be forbidden. Ishaq Abu Abdullah, who is the servant of Zahida, belongs to the Tabi'in; this has been stated by Imam Abu Hatim.
Hadith 2149
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ خُزَيْمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ هَاشِمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِكَعْبِ بْنِ عُجْرَةَ : " إِذَا تَوَضَّأْتَ ثُمَّ دَخَلْتَ الْمَسْجِدَ ، فَلا تُشَبِّكَنَّ بَيْنَ أَصَابِعِكَ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "When you perform ablution and enter the mosque, do not intertwine your fingers with each other."
