Chapter on the Obligation to Follow the Imam - Prohibition of the guest leading the host in his home except with permission
Hadith 2144
أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ ، وَابْنُ كَثِيرٍ ، وَالْحَوْضِيُّ ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ رَجَاءٍ ، عَنْ أَوْسِ بْنِ ضَمْعَجٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الْبَدْرِيِّ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَؤُمُّ الْقَوْمُ أَقْرَؤُهُمْ لِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ ، فَإِنْ كَانَتْ قِرَاءَتُهُمْ سَوَاءً ، فَلْيَؤُمَّهُمْ أَقْدَمُهُمْ هِجْرَةً ، فَإِنْ كَانُوا فِي الْهِجْرَةِ سَوَاءً ، فَلْيَؤُمَّهُمْ أَكْبَرُهُمْ سِنًّا ، وَلا يَؤُمُّ الرَّجُلُ الرَّجُلَ فِي بَيْتِهِ ، وَلا فِي فُسْطَاطِهِ ، وَلا يَقْعُدُ عَلَى تَكْرِمَتِهِ إِلا بِإِذْنِهِ " . قَالَ شُعْبَةُ : فَقُلْتُ لإِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ رَجَاءٍ : مَا تَكْرِمَتُهُ ؟ قَالَ : فِرَاشُهُ . وَلَمْ يَذْكُرُهُ الْحَوْضِيُّ : فَقُلْتُ لإِسْمَاعِيلَ .
Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud Badri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The one who has the most knowledge of Allah’s Book should lead the people in prayer. If they are equal in recitation, then the one who migrated earlier should lead. If they are also equal in migration, then the one who is older in age should lead. And no one should lead another in prayer in his house or in his tent, nor should he sit in his specific sitting place, except with his permission, as the rulings regarding his permission are different.” Shu’bah says: I asked Isma’il about the meaning of the word ‘taqarrumah’. He replied: It means his bedding. Hawzi, the narrator, did not mention this statement; I asked Isma’il about it.
