Chapter on the Obligation to Follow the Imam - Permission to shorten the prayer if someone behind has urgent needs
Hadith 2139
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ الضَّرِيرُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنِّي لأَدْخُلُ فِي الصَّلاةِ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُطِيلَهَا ، فَأَسْمَعَ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ ، فَأُخَفِّفَ مِمَّا أَعْلَمُ مِنْ شِدَّةِ وَجْدِ أُمِّهِ بِهِ " .
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When I begin the prayer, sometimes I intend to make it long, but then I hear the cry of a child, so I shorten the prayer because I know how much distress this causes the child's mother."
