Chapter on the Obligation to Follow the Imam - Report indicating this command from the Prophet was obligatory, not just recommended
Hadith 2105
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الأَزْدِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنْ هَمَّامِ بْنِ مُنَبِّهٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " ذَرُونِي مَا تَرَكْتُكُمْ ، فَإِنَّمَا هَلَكَ مَنْ قَبْلَكُمْ بِسُؤَالِهِمْ وَاخْتِلافِهِمْ عَلَى أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ ، فَإِذَا نَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْ شَيْءٍ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ ، وَإِذَا أَمَرْتُكُمْ بِالأَمْرِ فَأَتَوْا مِنْهُ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ " .
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave me as I leave you regarding matters; for those before you were destroyed only because of their excessive questioning and their disagreement with their prophets. So when I forbid you from something, avoid it, and when I command you to do something, do it to the best of your ability."
