Chapter on the Obligation of Congregation and Excuses Permitting Its Omission - Clarification that these two prayers are heaviest on hypocrites
Hadith 2098
أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا سَلْمُ بْنُ جُنَادَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ أَثْقَلَ الصَّلاةِ عَلَى الْمُنَافِقِينَ صَلاةُ الْعِشَاءِ وَصَلاةُ الْفَجْرِ ، وَلَوْ يَعْلَمُونَ مَا فِيهَا لأَتَوْهُمَا وَلَوْ حَبْوًا ، وَلَقَدْ هَمَمْتُ أَنْ آمُرَ بِالصَّلاةِ فَتُقَامَ ، ثُمَّ آمُرَ رَجُلا فَيُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ ، ثُمَّ أَنْطَلِقَ مَعِي بِرِجَالٍ مَعَهُمْ حِزَمُ حَطَبٍ إِلَى قَوْمٍ لا يَشْهَدُونَ الصَّلاةَ فَأُحَرِّقَ عَلَيْهِمْ بُيُوتَهُمْ بِالنَّارِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are the ‘Isha and Fajr prayers. If they knew how much reward and virtue there is in these two, they would surely join them, even if they had to come crawling. I intended to order the prayer to be established, then appoint someone to lead the people in prayer, then I would go with some men carrying bundles of wood to those who did not attend this prayer, and burn their houses down along with them."
