Ma’dan bin Abu Talhah al-‘Umari reports: Sayyiduna ‘Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said while delivering a sermon: I saw in a dream that a red rooster pecked me once, or perhaps twice. I think this means that the time of my death is near. If I pass away soon, the matter of consultation (shura) will be entrusted to those six individuals with whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased when he departed from this world. And I know that some people will try to create complications regarding this. I will fight against such people for Islam with this hand of mine. If they still do so, then they are enemies of Allah, disbelievers, and misguided people. And I bear witness regarding the governors of various regions: I sent them so that they may teach people the religion and the Sunnah of their Prophet, and distribute their wealth among them. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not emphasize anything as much (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words:) I did not ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about any matter with as much insistence as I asked about the verse concerning kalalah, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his hand on my chest and said: The verse revealed in the summer, which is at the end of Surah an-Nisa’, is sufficient for you: “They ask you for a legal verdict. Say: Allah gives you a verdict about kalalah.” (Sayyiduna ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said:) Soon I will give such a decision about this matter that everyone who can read and who cannot read will know it, and that decision will be for other than the father. This is what I think. Beware, O people! You eat the fruits of these two trees. I think both are impure: onions and garlic. If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sensed their smell from anyone, that person would be sent towards Baqi’. Whoever must eat them should cook them to remove their odor.
