Chapter on the Obligation of Congregation and Excuses Permitting Its Omission - The first excuse: illness preventing attendance
Hadith 2065
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مِهْرَانَ السَّبَّاكُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ صُهَيْبٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : لَمْ يَخْرُجْ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثَلاثًا ، فَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلاةُ فَذَهَبَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يتَقَدَّمُ ، وَقَالَ : رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالْحِجَابِ . فَرَفَعَهُ ، فَلَمَّا وَضَحَ لَنَا بَيَاضُ وَجْهِ نَبِيِّ اللَّهِ مَا نَظَرْنَا مَنْظَرًا قَطُّ أَعْجَبَ إِلَيْنَا مِنْ وَجْهِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ وَضَحَ لَنَا ، قَالَ : فَأَوْمَأَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِيَدِهْ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ أَنْ يَتَقَدَّمَ ، قَالَ : " وَأَرْخَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْحِجَابَ ، فَلَمْ يَقْدِرِ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى مَاتَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " .
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: For three days, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come to us (to lead the prayer). Then the iqamah was given for the prayer. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began to step forward, so by the order of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the curtain was lifted. When the whiteness of the blessed face of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) appeared before us, we had never seen any sight more beloved to us than the sight of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) when he came before us. The narrator says: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his blessed hand to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to move forward. The narrator says: Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) let the curtain fall. After that, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come to the mosque until his passing.
