Chapter on Leadership and Congregation - Section on the Virtue of Congregation - The reason the Prophet said, "May Allah grant you that"
Hadith 2041
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ التَّيْمِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَجُلٌ لا أَعْلَمُ رَجُلا مِنَ النَّاسِ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ مِمَّنْ يُصَلِّي الْقِبْلَةَ أَبْعَدَ جِوَارًا مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلِ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لَوْ أَنَّكَ اشْتَرَيْتَ حِمَارًا تَرْكَبُهُ فِي الظَّلْمَاءِ ، أَوِ الرَّمْضَاءِ ؟ فَقَالَ : فَنَمَا الْحَدِيثُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَسَأَلَهُ ، فَقَالَ : يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ أَرَدْتُ أَنْ يُكْتَبَ لِي إِقْبَالِي إِذَا أَقْبَلْتُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ وَرُجُوعِي إِذَا رَجَعْتُ . قَالَ : فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَعْطَاكَ اللَّهُ ذَلِكَ أَجْمَعَ ، أَنْطَاكَ اللَّهُ مَا احْتَسَبْتَ أَجْمَعَ " .
Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: There was a man who, to my knowledge, was among those who performed prayer facing the Qiblah, and no one's house was farther from the mosque than his. Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said to him, "You should buy a donkey so that you can ride it during dark nights or in the heat of summer; that would be appropriate." The narrator says: This matter reached the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He asked that man about it, and he replied, "O Messenger of Allah! I wish that when I come to the mosque and when I return, both my coming and going be recorded (i.e., I receive the reward for both)." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Allah the Exalted will grant you all that; all the reward you hope for, Allah the Exalted will grant you."
