Chapter on the Description of Prayer - Report refuting those who claim that supplicating in prayer with things not in the Quran invalidates the prayer
Hadith 1976
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْخَيْرِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : عَلِّمْنِي دُعَاءً أَدْعُو بِهِ فِي صَلاتِي ، قَالَ : " قُلِ : اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي ظُلْمًا كَثِيرًا وَلا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلا أَنْتَ ، فَاغْفِرْ لِي ، مَغْفِرَةً مِنْ عِنْدِكَ ، وَارْحَمْنِي إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr narrates this about Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq. He presented himself before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: "Teach me a supplication which I may recite during prayer." The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Recite this: 'O Allah! I have wronged myself greatly, and none forgives sins except You, so grant me forgiveness from Your presence and have mercy on me. Surely, You are the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.'"
