Sayyiduna Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said something in a low voice which we could not understand. He asked: Did you understand what I said? We replied: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: I mentioned a prophet to whom some armies from his own people were given, so he asked: Who can face them? Then Allah Almighty revealed to him: Choose one third of your people, or I will impose upon them an enemy from others, or I will impose hunger or death upon them. That prophet consulted his people about this. They said: O Prophet of Allah! We leave this matter to you. You choose for us. So he stood in the court of Allah Almighty to pray. Whenever those people turned to Allah Almighty, they would turn to prayer. That prophet performed as much prayer as Allah willed, then he said: O my Lord, as for the imposition of an enemy from another people or hunger, do not impose that upon them, but if death occurs, then impose death upon them for three days. So death was imposed upon them for three days, and seventy thousand of them died. As for the whispering you saw from me, in it I prayed: O Allah! I fight with Your help and attack with Your help. Nothing can happen without the help of Allah Almighty. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Sayyiduna Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away in the month of Rajab in the year 38 AH during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), while Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila was born two years after the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had passed.
