Ata bin Sa’ib narrates from his father that we were present in the mosque. In the meantime, Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) came in. He performed the prayer and performed it briefly. Then, as he passed by us, it was said to him: O Abu Yaqzan, you performed a brief prayer. He asked: The prayer you saw, was it brief? We replied: Yes. He said: I even recited in it the supplication which I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) recite. Then he left. One of those present followed him. The narrator named Ata stated that my father followed him but did not like to ask him, so I followed him. He asked him about this supplication. He returned and informed the people about this supplication: (Its words were as follows) "O Allah! I ask You by the means of Your knowledge of the unseen and by Your power over Your creation, to keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and to give me death when death is better for me. O Allah! I ask You for fear of You in the unseen and the seen, and I ask You for the word of truth in anger and in pleasure, and I ask You for moderation in poverty and in wealth. I ask You for a blessing that will never end, and for the coolness of my eyes that will never cease. I ask You for contentment with Your decree, and I ask You for the coolness of life after death (i.e., a good life after death), and I ask You for the pleasure of looking at Your Face, and I ask You for the longing to meet You. (All of this) without any harm and without any misleading trial. O Allah! Adorn us with the beauty of faith and make us guides and guided."
