Chapter on the Manner of Prayer – Clarification that the Prophet was asked about sending blessings upon him in prayer when mentioned in tashahhud
Hadith 1959
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ خُزَيْمَةَ ، وَكَتَبْتُهُ مِنْ أَصْلِهِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الأَزْهَرِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الأَزْهَرِ ، وَكَتَبْتُهُ مِنْ أَصْلِهِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، قَالَ : وَحَدَّثَنِي فِي الصَّلاةِ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا الْمَرْءُ الْمُسْلِمُ صَلَّى عَلَيْهِ فِي صَلاتِهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيُّ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : أَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ حَتَّى جَلَسَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنَحْنُ عِنْدَهُ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَمَّا السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ ، فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ إِذَا نَحْنُ صَلَّيْنَا فِي صَلاتِنَا ، صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ ؟ قَالَ : فَصَمَتَ حَتَّى أَحْبَبْنَا أَنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ ، قَالَ : " إِذَا صَلَّيْتُمْ عَلَيَّ فَقُولُوا : اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الأُمِّيِّ ، وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الأُمِّيِّ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ " .
Imam Ibn Khuzaymah narrated this tradition with his chain from the narrator named Ibn Ishaq. He says that he narrated to me about sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during prayer. Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud narrates: A man came and sat in front of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). At that time, we were present with him. That man said: As for sending peace upon you, we have come to know about it. When we are praying, how should we send blessings upon you? May Allah send blessings upon you. The narrator says: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) remained silent until we wished that the man had not asked you this question. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: When you begin to send blessings upon me, then recite this: “O Allah! Send blessings upon the unlettered Prophet, our master Muhammad (peace be upon him), and upon the family of our master Muhammad (peace be upon him), as You sent blessings upon our master Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and upon the family of our master Ibrahim (peace be upon him). And send blessings upon the unlettered Prophet, our master Muhammad (peace be upon him), and upon the family of our master Muhammad (peace be upon him), as You sent blessings upon our master Ibrahim and upon the family of our master Ibrahim. Surely, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.”
