Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Previously, when we used to sit behind the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) (during prayer), we used to say: “Peace be upon Allah before (it reaches) His servants, peace be upon Jibreel, peace be upon Sayyiduna Mika’il, and peace be upon so-and-so.” When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) completed the prayer, he said: “Indeed, Allah Himself is the Giver of peace. When any person sits during the prayer, he should first say: ‘All physical, verbal, and financial acts of worship are exclusively for Allah. O Prophet, peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon all the righteous servants of Allah.’” (The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, says:) “When a servant recites these words, (the greeting of peace) reaches every righteous servant in the heavens and the earth.” (After this, the person should say:) “I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger.” (The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, says:) “Then, regarding supplication, the person has a choice—whatever he wishes, he may supplicate for.”
