Chapter on the Manner of Prayer – Clarification that the first two units should be lengthened and the last two shortened
Hadith 1937
أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَوْنٍ الثَّقَفِيِّ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، قَالَ قَالَ عُمَرُ ، لِسَعْدٍ : قَدْ شَكَاكَ أَهْلُ الْكُوفَةِ فِي كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى فِي الصَّلاةِ . فَقَالَ : " أُطِيلُ الأُولَيَيْنِ ، وَأَحْذِفُ فِي الأُخْرَيَيْنِ ، وَمَا آلُو مِنْ صَلاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " . فَقَالَ : ذَاكَ الظَّنُّ بِكَ .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him): The people of Kufa have complained about you in every matter, even regarding the prayer. So Sayyiduna Sa’d said: I make the first two rak’ahs long and the last two rak’ahs short, and I do not fall short in following the way of prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This is what I thought of you.
