Chapter on the Manner of Prayer – Report indicating that people were commanded to remain still in prayer at the gesture of salam
Hadith 1880
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ خُزَيْمَةَ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ السَّعْدِيُّ ، قَالا : حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ خَشْرَمٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ ، عَنْ مِسْعَرٍ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْقِبْطِيَّةِ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا إِذَا صَلَّيْنَا خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قُلْنَا بِأَيْدِينَا : السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَمِينًا وَشِمَالا ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا لِي أَرَى أَيْدِيَكُمْ كَأَنَّهَا أَذْنَابُ خَيْلٍ شُمْسٍ ، إِنَّمَا يَكْفِي أَحَدَكُمْ أَنْ يَضَعَ يَدَيْهِ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When we used to perform prayer behind the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), we would gesture with our hands (while saying) "As-salamu Alaikum" to the right and to the left. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: What is the matter, I see your hands moving like the tails of unruly horses? It is sufficient for each of you to place both his hands on his knees and then turn to the right and to the left to offer salam.
