Sayyiduna Wa'il bin Hujr Hadrami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I thought to myself that I would definitely observe how the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the prayer. I observed him: when he stood up, he said the takbeer and raised his hands until he brought them level with his ears. He placed his right blessed hand on the back of his left hand’s palm, wrist, and forearm. Then, when he intended to go into ruku‘, he raised both his hands to the same extent (as he did at the beginning), then he went into ruku‘. Then he placed both his hands on his knees. Then he raised his head and raised both his hands to the same extent. Then he went into sujood. He placed both his palms in line with his ears. Then he sat down. He spread his left leg and placed his left hand on his left knee and his right hand on his right knee, and he placed his right elbow on his right knee. He joined two fingers together and made a circle with them, then raised one finger. I saw him moving it and supplicating with it. After that, once I came to him during the winter season and I saw that people were wearing winter clothes and they were moving their hands inside their clothes (i.e., they were performing the raising of the hands inside their cloaks).
Hadith 1861
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) began the prayer, he would raise both hands up to the shoulders. When he said the takbeer to go into bowing (ruku‘), and when he raised his head from bowing, he would raise them in the same way, and he would say: “Allah has heard the one who praised Him. Our Lord, to You belongs all praise.” The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would not do this (i.e., raise his hands) during the prostrations (i.e., between the two prostrations).
