Chapter on the Manner of Prayer – Report that may mislead some into thinking it contradicts Abu Sa’id’s narration
Hadith 1856
أَخْبَرَنَا الْمُفَضَّلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْجَنَدِيُّ ، بِمَكَّةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ زِيَادٍ اللَّحْجِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو قُرَّةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الأَنْصَارِيِّ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ : قَالَ : " كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَخَفَّ النَّاسِ صَلاةً فِي تَمَامٍ " . يُرِيدُ أَخَفَّ النَّاسِ صَلاةً فِيمَا اعْتَادَهَا النَّاسُ فِي ذَلِكَ الزَّمَانِ ، عَلَى حَسْبِ عَادَةِ الْمُصْطَفَى صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي صَلاتِهِ . وَأَمَّا خَبَرُ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : فَيَخْرُجُ أَحَدُنَا إِلَى الْبَقِيعِ لِيَقْضِيَ حَاجَتَهُ ، ثُمَّ يَجِيءُ فَيَتَوَضَّأُ ، فَيَجِدُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الأُولَى مِنَ الظُّهْرِ ، إِنَّمَا كَانَ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِيَتَلاحَقَ النَّاسُ فَيَشْهَدُوا الصَّلاةَ ، وَلا يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَةٍ ، إِنَّمَا كَانَ يَفْعَلُهُ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الأُولَى فَقَطْ ، وَفِيهِ كَالدَّلِيلِ عَلَى أَنَّ الْمُدْرِكَ لِلرُّكُوعِ مُدْرِكٌ لِلتَّكْبِيرَةِ الأُولَى .
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform a complete but the most concise prayer. By this, he meant: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform a concise prayer according to the general custom of the people of that time, which was in accordance with the general habit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). As for the narration transmitted by Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: One of us would go towards Baqi' to relieve himself, and then he would come back and perform ablution, and he would still catch the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the first rak'ah of the Zuhr prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do this so that people could also come and join the prayer. He did not do this in every rak'ah. He would do this only in the first rak'ah. In this, there is evidence that the one who catches the bowing (ruku') is considered to have caught the opening takbir.
