Chapter on the Manner of Prayer – Permissibility of lengthening the first unit of prayer as imam to allow latecomers to join
Hadith 1854
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ قَزَعَةَ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ عَنْ صَلاةِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : لَيْسَ لَكَ فِي ذَلِكَ خَيْرٌ ، كَانَتِ الصَّلاةُ تُقَامُ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَيَخْرُجُ أَحَدُنَا إِلَى الْبَقِيعِ لِيَقْضُيَ حَاجَتَهُ ، ثُمَّ يَجِيءُ ، فَيَتَوَضَّأُ ، فَيَجِدُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الأُولَى مِنَ الظُّهْرِ " .
Qaza’ah narrates: I asked Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) about the prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said: There is no good in it for you. The iqamah for the prayer would be pronounced for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then one of us would go to Baqi’ (the field) to relieve himself. Then he would return, perform ablution, and catch the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the first rak’ah of the Zuhr prayer.
