Book of Prayer

Chapter on the Manner of Prayer – Clarification that the statement “People stopped reciting and took heed” is from al-Zuhri, not Abu Hurairah

Hadith 1851
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in prayer. He recited aloud. When he finished the prayer with salam, he asked, "Has anyone among you recited along with me?" The people replied, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I was also wondering what was the reason that there was competition with me in the recitation of the Qur'an." Zuhri narrates: The Muslims refrained from this, and they would not recite while following him (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him). Imam Abu Hatim states: This narration is famous as being transmitted from Zuhri, which his companions have narrated from Ibn Akimah from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him). In this, Imam Awza'i made a mistake, because even a horse may stumble. He said: This is narrated from Zuhri from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib. Walid bin Muslim knew that he (Awza'i) had made a mistake, so he said: This is narrated from the person who heard it from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him). He did not mention Sa'id. As for Zuhri's statement that people refrained from reciting, it means that they did not recite aloud behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), following his prohibition. When the Imam is reciting aloud, this is mentioned in the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "What is the reason that there is dispute with me in the recitation of the Qur'an?"
