Chapter on the Manner of Prayer – Report refuting the claim that this narration is unique to Abu al-Zubair
Hadith 1840
أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ الْجُمَحِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ الرَّمَادِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، وأبي الزبير ، سمعا جابر بن عبد الله ، يزيد أحدهما على صاحبه ، قَالَ : كَانَ مُعَاذٌ يُصَلِّي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، ثُمَّ يَرْجِعُ إِلَى قَوْمِهِ فَيُصَلِّي بِهِمْ ، فَأَخَّرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الصَّلاةَ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ ، فَرَجَعَ مُعَاذٌ فَأَمَّهُمْ فَقَرَأَ بِسُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى ذَلِكَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ ، انْحَرَفَ إِلَى نَاحِيَةِ الْمَسْجِدِ ، فَصَلَّى وَحْدَهُ ، فَقَالُوا : نَافَقْتَ . قَالَ : لا ، وَلآتِيَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَلأُخْبِرَنَّهُ . فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ مُعَاذًا يُصَلِّي مَعَكَ ثُمَّ يَرْجِعُ فَيَؤُمُّنَا ، وَإِنَّكَ أَخَّرْتَ الصَّلاةَ الْبَارِحَةَ ، فَجَاءَ فَأَمَّنَا ، فَقَرَأَ بِسُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ ، وَإِنِّي أَخَّرْتَ عَنْهُ ، فَصَلَّيْتُ وَحْدِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، وَإِنَّا نَحْنُ أَصْحَابُ نَوَاضِحَ ، وَإِنَّا نَعْمَلُ بِأَيْدِينَا . فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَا مُعَاذُ ، أَفَتَّانٌ أَنْتَ ؟ اقْرَأْ بِهِمْ سُورَةَ : وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَى سورة الليل آية 1 ، وَ سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الأَعْلَى سورة الأعلى آية 1 ، وَالسَّمَاءِ ذَاتِ الْبُرُوجِ سورة البروج آية 1 " .
Amr bin Dinar and Abu Zubair narrate this hadith from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah. One of them has narrated more words than his companion. They state that Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) used to perform prayer behind the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Then he would go to his neighborhood and lead the people in prayer. Once, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) performed the Isha prayer a little late. (Sayyiduna Mu'adh performed the prayer behind the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.) Sayyiduna Mu'adh returned and began to lead those people in prayer. He started reciting Surah Al-Baqarah. When one of the people present saw this, he went to a corner of the mosque and performed the prayer alone. (And left.) The people said to him: You have become a hypocrite. He replied: No, I will go to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and inform him about this. Then he went to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: Sayyiduna Mu'adh performs prayer behind you, then comes back and leads us in prayer. Last night, you performed the prayer late. Sayyiduna Mu'adh came and started leading us in prayer, and he began reciting Surah Al-Baqarah. I stepped back and performed the prayer alone. O Messenger of Allah! We are people who draw water with camels and work with our own hands. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: O Mu'adh, do you want to put people to trial? When you lead these people in prayer, recite Surah Al-Lail, Surah Al-A'la, and Surah Al-Buruj.
