Chapter on the Manner of Prayer – Permissibility of reciting more in Maghrib prayer based on the congregation’s preference
Hadith 1836
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَلْمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عُرْوَةَ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مَرْوَانَ يَقْرَأُ بِ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ، وَ إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ ، فَقَالَ زَيْدٌ : فَحَلَفْتُ بِاللَّهِ ، " لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْرَأُ فِيهَا بِأَطْوَلِ الطَّوِيلَتَيْنِ المص سورة الأعراف آية 1 " .
Urwah bin Zubair narrates regarding Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that when he heard Marwan reciting Surah Ikhlas and Surah Kawthar, Sayyiduna Zaid said: I swear by the name of Allah that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite the longer of the two long surahs in this prayer, that is, he used to recite Alif Lam Meem Saad (i.e., Surah Al-A'raf).
