Hadith 1831
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَلْمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الأَوْزَاعِيُّ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْرَأُ بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ وَسُورَتَيْنِ مَعَهَا فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الأُولَيَيْنِ مِنْ صَلاةِ الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ ، وَيُسْمِعُنَا الآيَةَ أَحْيَانًا ، وَكَانَ يُطَوِّلُ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الأُولَى مِنْ صَلاةِ الظُّهْرِ " .
Abdullah bin Abu Qatadah narrates from his father: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to recite Surah Al-Fatihah and along with it two other surahs (i.e., in each rak'ah, another surah) in the first two rak'ahs of the Zuhr and Asr prayers. And sometimes he (peace be upon him) would recite a verse aloud so that we could hear it. He (peace be upon him) used to make the first rak'ah of the Zuhr prayer lengthy.
