Chapter on the Manner of Prayer – Report indicating that the Prophet did not recite aloud in Dhuhr and Asr
Hadith 1830
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي مَعْمَرٍ ، قَالَ : قُلْنَا لِخَبَّابٍ : بِأَيِّ شَيْءٍ كُنْتُمْ تَعْرِفُونَ قِرَاءَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ ؟ قَالَ : " بِاضْطِرَابِ لِحْيَتِهِ " . أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ اسْمُهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَخْبَرَةَ .
Abu Ma'mar narrates: We asked Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him), how did you people estimate the recitation of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in the Zuhr and Asr prayers? He replied: Because of the movement of his (peace be upon him) beard. The narrator named Abu Ma'mar's name is Abdullah bin Sukhayrah.
