Chapter on the Manner of Prayer – Report that may mislead some into thinking it contradicts the narration of Abu Sa’id
Hadith 1829
أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ خُزَيْمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ ، وَيَعْقُوبُ الدَّوْرَقِيُّ ، قَالا : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا هَمَّامٌ ، وَأَبَانُ ، جميعا عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " كَانَ يَقْرَأُ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الأُولَيَيْنِ مِنَ الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ وَسُورَةٍ ، وَيُسْمِعُنَا الآيَةَ أَحْيَانًا ، وَيَقْرَأُ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الأُخْرَيَيْنِ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ " .
Abdullah bin Abu Qatadah narrates from his father that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to recite Surah Al-Fatihah and another Surah in the first two rak'ahs of Zuhr and Asr prayers. Sometimes he would let us hear a verse (i.e., he would recite aloud), and in the last two rak'ahs, he would recite only Surah Al-Fatihah.
