Chapter on the Manner of Prayer – Clarification that it is permissible to recite more than what was described
Hadith 1828
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا مَنْصُورُ بْنُ زَاذَانَ ، عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الصِّدِّيقِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ، قَالَ : " كُنَّا نَحْزِرُ قِيَامَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الظُّهْرِ ، فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الأُولَيَيْنِ قَدْرَ ثَلاثِينَ آيَةً ، فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَةٍ ، قَدْرَ " الم تَنْزِيلُ " السَّجْدَةَ ، وَفِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الأُخْرَيَيْنِ عَلَى النِّصْفِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ ، وَحَزَرْنَا قِرَاءَتَهُ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الأُولَيَيْنِ مِنَ الْعَصْرِ ، عَلَى قَدْرِ الأُخْرَيَيْنِ مِنَ الظُّهْرِ ، وَحَزَرْنَا قِيَامَهُ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الأُخْرَيَيْنِ مِنَ الْعَصْرِ ، عَلَى قَدْرِ النِّصْفِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We used to estimate the standing (qiyam) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in prayer. In the Zuhr prayer, in the first two rak'ahs, he would recite in each rak'ah an amount equal to thirty verses, and in each rak'ah he would recite as much as Surah Alif Lam Mim Tanzil As-Sajdah. And in the last two rak'ahs of the Zuhr prayer, he would recite half of that. We estimated his recitation in the first two rak'ahs of the Asr prayer, and it was equal to the last two rak'ahs of the Zuhr prayer. And we estimated his standing in the last two rak'ahs of the Asr prayer, and it was half of what he would stand in the first two rak'ahs of Asr.
