Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I remember the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remaining silent at two occasions. (The narrator says) I mentioned this to Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him), so he said to me: I only remember him remaining silent at one occasion. Then we wrote a letter regarding this to Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) in Madinah Munawwarah. He replied: Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) remembers this matter correctly. The narrator named Sa'id says: We asked Qatadah: What were these two occasions of silence? He said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would begin the prayer, and when he would finish the recitation. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Hasan did not hear anything from Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him). He heard this narration from Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him), and in this matter, our reliance is upon the narration transmitted from Sayyiduna Imran (may Allah be pleased with him), not the one transmitted from Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him).
