Chapter on the Manner of Prayer – Explicit report that reciting Al-Fatiha is obligatory for followers just as it is for individuals
Hadith 1785
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ خُزَيْمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُؤَمَّلُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ الْيَشْكُرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عُلَيَّةَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، حَدَّثَنِي مَكْحُولٌ ، عَنْ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ وَكَانَ يَسْكُنُ إِيلِيَاءَ ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ ، قَالَ : صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلاةَ الصُّبْحِ ، فَثَقُلَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْقِرَاءَةُ ، فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ ، قَالَ : " إِنِّي لأَرَاكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ وَرَاءَ إِمَامِكُمْ " . قَالَ : قُلْنَا : أَجَلْ ، يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، هَذَا . قَالَ : " فَلا تَفْعَلُوا إِلا بِأُمِّ الْكِتَابِ ، فَإِنَّهُ لا صَلاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِهَا " .
Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) led us in the morning prayer. It became difficult for him to recite (Qur'an). When he completed the prayer, he said: I think you recite behind your Imam as well. The narrator says: We said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! That is so. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Do not do so. You should recite Surah Al-Fatihah. The prayer of the one who does not recite it is not valid.
