Chapter on Conditions of Prayer - Phrase that might mislead some into thinking prayer without intention is valid.
Hadith 1718
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفِيانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَبَّانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي عِمْرَانَ الْجَوْنِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ ، عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ ، قَالَ : أَوْصَانِي خَلِيلِي بِثَلاثٍ : " اسْمَعْ وَأَطِعْ وَلَوْ لِعَبْدٍ مُجَدَّعِ الأَطْرَافِ ، وَإِذَا صَنَعْتَ مَرَقَةً فَأَكْثِرْ مَاءَهَا ، ثُمَّ انْظُرْ إِلَى أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ مِنْ جِيرَانِكَ فَأَصِبْهُمْ مِنْهُ بِمَعْرُوفٍ ، وَصَلِّ الصَّلاةَ لِوَقْتِهَا ، فَإِنْ وَجَدْتَ الإِمَامَ قَدْ صَلَّى فَقَدْ أَحْرَزْتَ صَلاتَكَ ، وَإِلا فَهِيَ نَافِلَةٌ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: My beloved (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) advised me regarding three things: To obey and follow (the ruler), even if he is a slave with mutilated nose and ears. When you make broth, add more water to it. Then look at one of your neighbors’ houses and give them a suitable portion from it. Perform the prayer at its (prescribed) time. If you find the imam has already performed the prayer, then you have protected your prayer; otherwise, (if you perform it again with the imam) your second prayer will be considered voluntary.
