Chapter on Conditions of Prayer - Second report clarifying that the prohibition of prayer in camel enclosures is not due to devils.
Hadith 1704
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ الأَنْصَارِيُّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : كُنْتُ أَسِيرُ مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بِطَرِيقِ مَكَّةَ ، فَلَمْا خَشِيتُ الصُّبْحَ نَزَلْتُ فَأَوْتَرْتُ ، فَقَالَ : أَلَيْسَ لَكَ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُسْوَةٌ ؟ فَقُلْتُ : بَلَى وَاللَّهِ ، قَالَ : فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ " يُوتِرُ عَلَى الْبَعِيرِ " . قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : لَوْ كَانَ الزَّجْرُ عَنِ الصَّلاةِ فِي أَعْطَانِ الإِبِلِ لأَجَلِ أَنَّهَا خُلِقَتْ مِنَ الشَّيَاطِينِ لَمْ يُصَلِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الْبَعِيرِ ، إِذْ مُحَالٌ أَنْ لا تَجُوزَ الصَّلاةُ فِي الْمَوَاضِعِ الَّتِي قَدْ يَكُونُ فِيهَا الشَّيْطَانُ ، ثُمَّ تَجُوزُ الصَّلاةُ عَلَى الشَّيْطَانِ نَفْسِهِ ، بَلْ مَعْنَى قَوْلِهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِنَّهَا خُلِقَتْ مِنَ الشَّيَاطِينِ ، أَرَادَ بِهِ أَنَّ مَعَهَا الشَّيَاطِينُ عَلَى سَبِيلِ الْمُجَاوَرَةِ وَالْقُرْبِ .
Saeed bin Yasar narrates: I was traveling towards Makkah with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). When I feared that dawn was near, I got down from my mount and performed Witr. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: Is there not an example for you in the way of Allah’s Messenger? I replied: Yes, by Allah! (There is an example.) So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to perform Witr on his camel. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) If the basic reason for the prohibition of praying in camel enclosures was that they were created from devils, then the Prophet (peace be upon him) would not have prayed on a camel. Because it is impossible that it would not be permissible to pray in a place where a devil is present, but it would be permissible to pray on the devil itself. The meaning of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) statement “they were created from devils” is that what he meant was: in terms of association and proximity, the devil is with them.
