Chapter on Adhan - Instruction to repeat phrases in the adhan, contrary to those who dislike it.
Hadith 1680
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الأَزْدِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مُحَيْرِيزٍ ، أَخْبَرَهُ وَكَانَ يَتِيمًا فِي حِجْرِ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ حِينَ جَهَّزَهُ إِلَى الشَّامِ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لأَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ : إِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَخْرُجَ إِلَى الشَّامِ ، وَإِنِّي أَسْأَلُ عَنْ تَأْذِينِكَ ، فَأَخْبِرْنِي ، قَالَ : خَرَجْتُ فِي نَفَرٍ ، فَكُنَّا فِي بَعْضِ طَرِيقِ حُنَيْنٍ ، مَقْفَلَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ حُنَيْنٍ ، فَلَقِيَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي بَعْضِ الطَّرِيقِ ، فَأَذَّنَ مُؤَذِّنُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالصَّلاةِ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَسَمِعْنَا الصَّوْتَ وَنَحْنُ مُتَنَكِّبُونَ عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ ، فَصَرَخْنَا نَسْتِهْزِئُ ، نَحْكِيهِ ، فَسَمِعَ الصَّوْتَ ، فَقَالَ : " أَيُّكُمْ يَعْرِفُ هَذَا الَّذِي أَسْمَعُ الصَّوْتَ ؟ " ، قَالَ : فَجِيءَ بِنَا ، فَوَقَفْنَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ : " أَيُّكُمْ صَاحِبُ الصَّوْتِ ؟ " ، قَالَ : فَأَشَارَ الْقَوْمُ كُلُّهُمْ إِلَيَّ ، قَالَ : فَأَرْسَلَهُمْ وَحَبَسَنِي عِنْدَهُ ، وَلا شَيْءَ أَكْرَهُ إِلَيَّ مِمَّا يَأْمُرُنِي بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَمَرَنِي بِالأَذَانِ ، وَأَلْقَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَيَّ نَفْسُهُ الأَذَانَ ، فَقَالَ : " قُلِ : اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي : " ارْجِعْ وَامْدُدْ صَوْتَكَ " ، قَالَ : " أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلاةِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلاةِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلاحِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلاحِ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ " ، فَلَمْا فَرَغَ مِنَ التَّأْذِينِ دَعَانِي فَأَعْطَانِي صُرَّةً فِيهَا شَيْءٌ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ ، وَقَالَ : " اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ فِيهِ وَبَارِكْ عَلَيْهِ " ، قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، مُرْنِي بِالتَّأْذِينِ ، قَالَ : " قَدْ أَمَرْتُكَ بِهِ " ، قَالَ : فَعَادَ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ مِنَ الْكَرَاهِيَةِ فِي الْقَلْبِ إِلَى الْمَحَبَّةِ ، فَقَدِمْتُ عَلَى عَتَّابِ بْنِ أُسَيْدٍ عَامَلِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَكُنْتُ أُأَذِّنُ بِمَكَّةَ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ : وَأَخْبَرَنِي غَيْرُ وَاحِدٍ مِنْ أَهْلِي خَبَرَ ابْنِ مُحَيْرِيزٍ هَذَا عَنْ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ .
Abdullah Muhairiz narrates: He was under the guardianship of Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah. When he was about to go to Syria, he narrates: I said to Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah, "I am about to go to Syria. I will be asked about the incident of the Adhan, so please tell me about it." Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah told me: We were a group of people who set out and were at a place on the way to Hunayn. At that time, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was returning from Hunayn. The Prophet (peace be upon him) encountered us on the way. The Messenger of Allah's mu'adhdhin gave the Adhan for prayer in the presence of the Prophet (peace be upon him). We heard his voice. We had moved aside from the road, so we began to repeat those words loudly in mockery. The Prophet (peace be upon him) heard this voice. He inquired: "Who among you knows the person whose voice I have heard?" The narrator says: Then we were brought and made to stand before the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: "Whose voice was that among you?" The narrator says: Everyone pointed towards me. The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) let all of them go and kept me with him. There was nothing more disliked to me than what the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) commanded me. He ordered me to give the Adhan. The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself taught me the words of the Adhan. He said: Say this: «اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ» «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ» «اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ» «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ» «أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ» «أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ» Then he said to me: "Do tarji‘ in it and raise your voice." Then he said these words: «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ» «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ» «اَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ» «أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ» «حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ» «حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ» «حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ» «حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ» «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ» «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ» «لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ» When he finished giving the Adhan, the Prophet (peace be upon him) called me and gave me a pouch in which there was a little silver, and he prayed: "O Allah! Bless it and bless him." The narrator says: I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Command me to give the Adhan." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "We command you." The narrator says: Then all the dislike I had in my heart for the Prophet (peace be upon him) turned into love. Then I went to the governor appointed by the Prophet (peace be upon him), Sayyiduna ‘Attab bin Asid, and under the command of the Prophet (peace be upon him), I began to give the Adhan in Makkah. Ibn Jurayj says: Many members of my family narrated this narration to me from Ibn Muhairiz, from Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah.
