أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ النَّاقِدُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيُّ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : لَمْا أَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالنَّاقُوسِ لِيُضْرَبَ بِهِ ، لِيَجْتَمِعَ النَّاسُ إِلَى الصَّلاةِ ، أَطَافَ بِي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ، وَأَنَا نَائِمٌ رَجُلٌ عَلَيْهِ ثَوْبَانِ أَخْضَرَانِ ، وَفِي يَدَهِ نَاقُوسٌ يَحْمِلُهُ ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ أَتَبِيعُ النَّاقُوسَ ؟ قَالَ : فَمَا تَصْنَعُ بِهِ ؟ قُلْتُ : أَدْعُو بِهِ إِلَى الصَّلاةِ ، قَالَ : أَفَلا أَدُلُّكَ عَلَى خَيْرٍ مِنْ ذَلِكَ ؟ قُلْتُ : بَلَى ، قَالَ : إِذَا أَرَدْتَ أَنْ تُؤَذِّنَ تَقُولُ : اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلاةِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلاةِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلاحِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلاحِ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ ، ثُمَّ اسْتَأْخَرَ غَيْرَ بَعِيدٍ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : تَقُولُ إِذَا أَقَمْتَ الصَّلاةَ : اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلاةِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلاحِ ، قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلاةُ ، قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلاةُ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ ، فَلَمْا أَصْبَحْتُ غَدَوْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّهَا لَرُؤْيَا حَقٍّ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ ، قُمْ فَأَلْقِ عَلَى بِلالٍ مَا رَأَيْتَ ، فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ ، فَإِنَّهُ أَنْدَى صَوْتًا " ، فَقُمْتُ مَعَ بِلالٍ فَجَعَلْتُ أُلْقِي عَلَيْهِ ، وَيُؤَذِّنُ بِذَلِكَ ، فَسَمِعَ عُمَرُ صَوْتَهُ ، وَهُوَ فِي بَيْتِهِ عَلَى الزَّوْرَاءِ فَقَامَ يَجُرُّ رِدَاءَهُ ، يَقُولُ : وَالَّذِي بَعَثَ مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، بِالْحَقِّ لأُرِيتُ مِثْلَ مَا رَأَى ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " فَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was commanded regarding the bell, that it should be rung so that people may gather for prayer, then at night while I was asleep, a person came to me who was wearing two green sheets. In his hand was a bell which he was holding. I said: O servant of Allah! Will you sell this bell? He asked: What will you do with it? I replied: I will call people to prayer with it. He asked: Shall I not guide you to something better than this? I replied: Yes. He said: When you intend to announce, then say: «اللهُ أَكْبَرُ», «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ», «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ», «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ», «أَشْهَدُ أَن لَّا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ», «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ», «أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ», «أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ», «حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ», «حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ», «حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ», «حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ» «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ», «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ», «لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ» Then he moved back a little and said: When you are about to establish the prayer (i.e., say the Iqamah), then say: «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ», «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ», «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ», «أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ», «حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ» «حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ», «قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ», «قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ», «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ», «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ», «لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ» (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates:) When morning came, I went to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him about this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If Allah wills, this dream will become reality. Get up and teach these words to Bilal which you have seen (in the dream), so he may call the Adhan accordingly, for his voice is louder than yours. So I stood with Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) and I kept telling him those words and he kept calling the Adhan accordingly. When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) heard his voice, he was at his house at the place called "Zawra". He came dragging his cloak and said: By the One Who sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth! I was also shown a dream like he was shown. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: All praise is due to Allah alone for this.
