Chapter on Mosques - The reason for this prohibition.
Hadith 1614
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ الْجُمَحِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمْةَ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلابَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لا تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى يَتَبَاهَى النَّاسُ فِي الْمَسَاجِدِ " .
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Hour will not be established until people boast to one another regarding the construction of mosques."
Hadith 1615
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ قَحْطَبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفِيانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ سُفِيانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي فَزَارَةَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ الأَصَمِّ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا أُمِرْتُ بِتَشْيِيدِ الْمَسَاجِدِ " ، قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ : لَتُزَخْرِفُنَّهَا كَمَا زَخَرَفْتَهَا الْيَهُودُ ، وَالنَّصَارَى ، أَبُو فَزَارَةَ رَاشِدُ بْنُ كَيْسَانَ مِنْ ثِقَاتِ الْكُوفِيينَ وَأَثْبَاتِهِمْ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have not been commanded to adorn the mosques." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "You people will adorn these mosques just as the Jews and Christians adorned (their places of worship)." The narrator Abu Fazarah is Rashid bin Kaysan, and he is among the trustworthy and reliable narrators from Kufa.
